Resource challenges in a startup...

When you are in a startup its always tempting to say - the reason we don't know X or have not built Y is because we don't have resources to do X or Y.

In my experience, esp. in a startup you will never have enough people to do what you want to do. You need to
  • Get really good at prioritization. Even if you assume that you are iterating rapidly, you still cannot iterate on lots of things, you need to pick a couple hypothesis well.
  • Get good at asking the right questions. There is a lot of noise that you will have to sift through. If you spend your limited resources on the wrong part of the puzzle, you will not be able to make the right decisions.

If you are only doing 1/2 the right things, then doubling the team is not as much help, you are going to be more wasteful, have more stuff to manage and might actually end up producing less impact to your customers and business.
